Reflect on the following questions and answer them in some detail.
1. Which of the possible venues do you think would best suit this play? Why do you believe the dramatic action would be best served in this venue? I think that a black box theatre is a good idea for the play because of the way it would be set up. Between being in a car, at a bar, a dinner table, and a hotel room, the audience needs to be able to hear and see what is going on. With a black box theatre, the audience and the stage is closely knit together. The actor would have enough space to act and the audience would see everything closer, allowing them to take advantage of the uncomfortable vibe that happens when the play unfolds.
2. What are some of the design challenges posed by the play? Design challenges in the play include how to recreate the car scenes, and how to add in the flashbacks while Li’l Bit is driving. Because Li’l Bit is driving throughout most of it as well as recounting what has happened through her life, it might pose a problem of how to add all of that into the play.
3. Choose the various chorus characters and discuss how you see them dressed. In what ways do you think the costumes you describe would help articulate their purpose in this play? When it comes to the Female Greek Chorus, I picture the characters (Li’l Bit’s mother, grandmother, and aunt) dressed in long button up dresses. I picture plain fabric or printed floral patterns. I think that their costumes accentuate how they will act in the play and therefore show their purpose in the play. When her mom tells her that Peck is Li’l Bit’s responsibility, it shows a much older view that has been displaced, so I would picture her in a longer, maybe floral dress.
4. Provide some ideas about the use of light in the play? For lighting, scenes in which it is only Li’l Bit and her uncle could have lighting only on those characters. The scenes in which Li’l Bit is driving alone could have lighting on only her and the maybe on the backdrop of a rode she is driving through.
5. Suggest music and sound effects that could help accentuate the mood or atmosphere of the play. Sound effects that could accentuate the mood or atmosphere of the play include the revving up of engines, and the sounds of cars passing. Music that could accentuate the play include maybe more eerie classical music to suggest suspense or something bad when Li’l Bit was in the car with her uncle. Sad or a more monotone classical song could be played in the beginning and end when Li’l Bit is driving by herself as a much older woman.
